Your adventure begins with secure covered parking at the host's residence, followed by a gentle five-minute stroll along a well-formed native bush track. As the sounds of the outside world fade away, you'll arrive at a beautiful bush glen where your private cabin awaits.
Designed exclusively for adults, this tranquil hideaway is the perfect place to relax, reconnect, and unwind. The spacious bathroom features a deep soaking bath with uninterrupted views into the surrounding native forest and up to the night sky. With complete privacy, there's no need to close the blinds—you'll simply be sharing the view with the native wood pigeons (kererū) and tūī. For a truly magical experience, turn off the lights and soak beneath the stars through the overhead glass panels. Please note that the cabin's water supply is gravity-fed, so the shower pressure is gentler than a standard pumped system.
The open-plan living area is warm and inviting, featuring a luxurious king-size bed, a comfortable three-seater sofa, and a dining table with chairs. Large windows throughout the cabin frame the surrounding native bush, creating the feeling of being immersed in nature from every angle.
Sustainability is at the heart of the cabin's design. It has been thoughtfully constructed using a range of recycled and environmentally friendly materials, including ModWood and Onduline roofing. We also use environmentally friendly cleaning products throughout, and even our vacuum cleaner is eco-friendly.
The cabin operates off-grid, powered by solar energy, with hot water supplied via a wetback connected to the Studio wood-fired oven. Meals can be prepared using the gas hob or the Studio oven, which is perfect for slow-cooked meals or gently reheating food while filling the cabin with the comforting warmth of a wood fire.
Finding us couldn't be easier. Simply head to 1878 Mangorei Road, New Plymouth and continue to the very end of the road, where the Department of Conservation walking track begins. You'll see the Pouakai Cabins sign on the right-hand side, where your unforgettable bush escape begins.

Lovely place to stay. A very scenic and peaceful place to relax
Lovely property & the bath & view are amazing. Only downfall was finding crusty marks on the fake fur throw, an oil stain on the pillow and sex books on the shelf.... I understand different folks different stokes, but with the marks on the throw & pillow topped off with the sex books it made it feel a bit gross. After paying $225 a night to stay, you have to do your dishes & vacuum the floor as they aren't a hotel & do not have staff. It was lovely but a once off.
Such a beautiful place, photos really don't do it justice. Couldn't have asked for a better place for a relaxing night away, the only problem was I didn't want to leave!
This property is superb for those people who are looking for isolation with all mod cons that you require to completely relax with. You have to see for yourself what this is like so let your fingers do the booking you wont be disappointed.
My husband and I love coming to this property for a night away. The surroundings are of the most relaxing, peaceful, beautiful settings and only 20 mins from the city!! It is becoming a regular occurrence for us to escape and relax.
